A plain steel bowl covering the crown of the head, raised from a single plate or riveted from two halves along a central ridge. It leaves the face and ears open, which costs protection but keeps sight and hearing clear — and so carries none of the perception penalty a closed helm does. Every soldier who can afford steel at all owns one of these before anything more elaborate.
