Box, wooden, 12 x 8 x 6 in

Small carved wooden box with a fitted lid, for oddments and keepsakes.

A small box of thin boards with a fitted or sliding lid, often carved or chip-decorated on the top since it costs a woodworker little extra and sells for more. Such boxes hold sewing, letters, dice, spices, or whatever a household counts as small and worth keeping together. They are the commonest gift a woodworker makes and the commonest thing a traveller buys at a fair.
