A fire-bucket of heavy cowhide, boiled and shaped over a form and then pitched inside and out to hold water. A wooden or iron hoop stitched into the rim keeps the mouth open, and a leather or rope bail lets it be swung from ladder to ladder in a bucket-brigade line. Lighter than a stave-built bucket and far less fragile when dropped, it is stacked flat by the score in town halls, watch-houses, and the yards of any prudent landlord.
