Trunk, wooden

Large banded travelling trunk with a domed lid (1.5 x 2 x 3.5 feet).

A large travelling chest of planked wood banded with iron straps, its lid often domed so that rain runs off and nothing is stacked on top of it. A trunk is the possession of someone who moves household — a bride, a scholar taking a post, a merchant’s factor sent abroad — and rides on a cart rather than a back. Two people carry it by the end handles, and neither enjoys it.
