Bowl, ceramic

Glazed earthenware bowl for pottage, milk, or dough.

A deep earthenware bowl glazed on the inside, the workhorse of any kitchen that can afford more than wood. It takes pottage at table, milk to settle for cream, or dough to prove by the fire. Glazed ceramic does not sour the way a wooden bowl does after years of use, and it can be scoured properly — but it chips at the rim and a dropped bowl is simply gone.
