Brazier

A cast-iron or bronze basin set on a tripod or short legs, filled with live coals or charred wood to provide steady warmth where a hearth-fire is absent. Braziers are favored in great halls, barracks, and wealthy merchant houses during winter; the basin is deep enough to hold coals for hours without constant tending. A brazier sheds sufficient light to read by and radiates heat across a room, though it demands care—a tipped brazier spills burning coals and can consume a tapestry or wooden beam in moments.
