Candleholder, hand

Iron or brass cup with handle; holds single candle, drip-tray included.

Iron or brass cast into a shallow cup with a handle, sized to grip in one hand while a single candle burns in the socket. Most hand-holders feature a drip-tray below the cup to catch melting wax and protect clothing. Servants, night-watches, and those moving through dark halls carry hand-holders to light their way; the open flame flickers with movement but the close proximity of hand-holder and face gives good sight of the immediate path.
