Carpentry Kit

A leather roll holding a journeyman’s core tools: chisels of varying widths, a wooden plane, a handsaw with cross-grain teeth, an auger, a smoothing stone, and a wooden measure rule. Carpenters, shipwrights, and master builders carry such kits from job to job, each tool worn smooth by years of use. A kit suited to timber-framing differs markedly from one for fine joinery, and a craftsman’s reputation rests partly on knowing which tool serves each purpose best.
