Chisel

A steel blade roughly a hand-width wide, fitted into a wooden or ash handle, beveled on one face and driven by mallet or hammer. Stone masons, carpenters, and sculptors rely on chisels to split seams, hollow joinery, or rough out shape. A keen edge is prized; a dull chisel risks glancing blows and crushed knuckles, so smiths and craftsmen regularly sharpen the blade against the honing stone.
