A fine powder of logwood or iron-tannate mordanted with alum or oak-gall salts, kept in a stoppered earthenware pot. Wool-dyers and linen-workers prize black for mourning cloth and formal wear; it sets fast with a weak acid bath and yields deep, enduring color. Cloth is hand-stirred in the dye-vat over several hours to ensure even saturation.
