A thick disc of hard, fine-grained stone—sandstone or granite—mounted horizontally on a wooden axle or legs, used for grinding grain, ore, or pigment. The stone face is rough and porous, worn smooth by years of use; millers, smiths, and dyers all rely on a good grindstone. One person turns the handle while another feeds the hopper; the lower runner stone stays fixed on a pedestal.
