Ink, Red

Vermilion or madder-root ink, costly and bright, reserved for titles, opening capitals, and rubrication in illuminated manuscripts. A scribe begins each chapter in red—hence “rubric”—to mark hierarchy and break the flow of black text. The pigment is mordanted with alum for permanence.
