Dried lentils, small and lens-shaped, are the poor man’s protein and a staple of soldier’s stores. They boil quickly into thick porridge or stretch a meager portion of meat into a full pot. Bundled in cloth sacks, they survive long travel and spoil slowly if kept from damp.
