A string of turned wooden beads, drilled, polished, and knotted onto a cord. The beads are cheap but the stringing is not quite trivial, and a well-made necklace is graded from small at the nape to large at the throat. Some are strung as ornament and some for counting — prayers, tallies, days of a journey — and the two are told apart by the wear on the beads rather than by the making.
