Oatcakes

Oatcakes—thin, crisp rounds baked on a griddle—are the traveler’s bread, keeping dry for months in a bundled cloth. A dozen cakes weigh little and swell in the belly when soaked in broth or water. Every northern household bakes them in winter; merchants sell them cheap by the bag.
