Pie, Fruit

A hand-sized fruit pie, warm from the baker’s oven or day-old and still firm, holds sweet apple or berry filling in a buttered crust. A laborer buys one for his midday meal; a child receives it as a rare treat. Bakers sell them cheap by afternoon, before they stale, or keep them wrapped for travelers.
