A copper band, the cheapest metal ring a pedlar carries and the one sold by the tray at fairs and festivals. Copper is soft and works easily, so a village smith can turn out a dozen in an afternoon, but it greens with wear and leaves a stain on the finger beneath. Some hold that the stain draws off aches from the joints, and old folk wear one on that account.
