This stouter hemp line is twisted from three strands of heavy cordage, each strand itself a cable. A rope of this girth is hauled by teams of oxen to hoist boulders into place, or fastened to the mainmast of a merchant vessel—heavy enough to carry a small horse, common in the rigging of war-galleries and merchant caravans. Tarred against rot, it lasts for years of hard use.
