Spade

A flat blade of wood shod along its edge and shoulders with iron, or in better work an iron blade throughout, set on a shaft with a crossbar or D-grip. Spades dig drainage, cut peat, sink post holes, and — when armies pass — throw up earthworks. The iron shoeing is what distinguishes a tool that lasts a decade from one that splits in a season against stony ground.
