A hinged iron lever — the goat’s-foot — that hooks over the crossbow string and pivots against a lug on the stock, letting the user span a prod far heavier than their arms could draw. It hangs at the belt and is lost at exactly the wrong moment. Few smiths outside the eastern trade make a good one, since the pivot must take the whole force of the prod without spreading.
