Spurs

Iron or bronze rowels attached to a rider’s heels by leather straps, used to urge a horse forward through subtle pressure rather than force. A blunt rowel communicates a gentle request; a sharp rowel draws blood if the rider is rough-handed. Cavalry and mounted nobility wear spurs as a mark of station; the quality and decoration of the rowel signal the bearer’s rank and martial experience.
