Straw plaited into narrow braids and stitched together into sheet — the material of every field hat, and of the lighter summer wear and coarse matting besides. It weighs about 6 ounces the square yard. It is not woven on a loom and comes in no standard bolt: the plait is made by the fathom and worked up as needed, so it is bought by the square yard at 3d.
