Table

A heavy board on trestles, which in most houses is dismantled and stood against the wall between meals to clear the floor for work and sleeping. A fixed joined table is a mark of a household with room to spare. The board itself is scrubbed white with sand and takes a generation of knife scars before it needs replacing.
