A pulley of wood and bronze, fitted with a single wheel that turns on an iron axle. The block is fastened to a fixed point by a loop of cord, and rope is threaded through to multiply mechanical advantage for hauling cargo or raising a wounded companion from a ravine. Sailors and siege engineers always carry one.
