A coil of stout jute or hemp twine, spun from plant fiber and twisted to grip without slipping. Coarser and rougher than string, it is used to bind bundles of firewood, secure loads to a pack animal, or lash tent-poles together. A merchant or laborer wraps a coil around the waist and always has cordage at hand.
