Vetches

Vetches are small legume seeds harvested from spreading vines, dried hard and stored in bulk for winter feeding. Soaked overnight and simmered, they soften into a mild porridge; unseasoned, they provide filling sustenance at minimal cost. Peasants and soldiers rely on vetches; wealthy tables avoid them. The plant also feeds livestock and enriches exhausted soil when plowed under.
