A spoked wheel of three woods — elm for the hub that will not split, oak for the spokes, ash for the felloes of the rim — bound with an iron tyre shrunk on hot so that it grips as it cools. Wheelwrighting is its own trade for good reason: a wheel is dished slightly so that it braces against the load’s sway, and getting that dish right is the difference between a wheel that lasts years and one that collapses on the first rutted mile.
