Fate is counted among the divinatory arts and is the odd one out in every respect. The other divinations read something outside the diviner — the sky, the cards, a beast’s liver, a still surface. Fate reads the character’s own thread: they reach for the strand of destiny they were born holding, find the moment they are living through, and pull.
Two things follow. It is the only divination performed on oneself — there is no subject, no medium and nothing to prepare, and a character may call on it in the middle of anything, with a sword in their hand if need be. And it is the only one that changes what it reads: every other art looks and reports, while Fate takes hold. That is also why it is the one art with a price, since the reading can cost the very Fate that made it possible.
Spending it. Fate is not invoked the way an ability is; it is a resource held and spent, and it works on a test that has already been rolled. Spending a point raises that test’s success level — it never re-rolls the dice, and the gain is not capped at a Critical Success. Spending rolls a Fate Test of its own against the character’s Fate Mastery Level: a Critical Failure loses the point for nothing, a Marginal Failure costs nothing and changes nothing, a Marginal Success spends it for one level, and a Critical Success offers the choice of spending for two levels or keeping the point and taking one.
What bears on it. The Fate Mastery Level this entry carries begins at 50 and rises by half the character’s Aura, so the more numinous the character, the more reliably Fate answers. The points themselves are held as charges and are either general or tied to one named skill. Fate is withheld entirely from a character with no usable Aura, from any Aura-governed test, from every Mystical Ability test, and from a Fate Test itself; it is unavailable under Aural Shock; and a result once fated cannot be fated again.
Whether Fate is in play at all is a game option. The whole of the rule is set out under Fate Points, and the art’s place among the divinations under Fate.
