Spirit

A discrete act carried out through an allied spirit, governed by its Spirit Power.

A Spirit Action is a discrete supernatural act carried out through an allied or bound spirit — the spirit-world counterpart of an everyday deed. Roaming the spirit world, sensing across it, and communing with what dwells in it are the typical examples; this entry is the general form from which a particular action is made.

The distinction from a Spirit Rite is one of preparation, not of power. A rite is a prepared ceremony, petitioning the spirit world at length; an action is done, in the moment, the way a person opens a door. Both are performed through the same channel.

Invoking it. A Spirit Action is a Success Test like any other Mystical Ability, but it is spirit-governed: it draws its EML from the Spirit Power it is performed through, not from a skill and not from a rating of its own. That power is the standing conduit a spirit has conferred on the worker — an Ancestor’s, a Totem’s, or one of the elemental Energies’ — and without a Spirit Power to work through there is no action to perform. The action’s own modifiers stack on top of whatever mastery level the power supplies.

What bears on the test. The Spirit Power’s mastery level first of all, so a spirit-worker improves at every action at once by deepening the relationship the power rests on; then the action’s own modifiers and the circumstances of the attempt. Nothing may be performed while the worker carries Aural Shock, and no Mystical Ability test may be fated.

The form is set out under Spirit Action, and the channel it works through under Spirit Power.
