Talent

An untaught arcane knack, invoked directly and free of the incantation penalty.

A Talent is an arcane knack possessed without formal training — a natural facility for one particular effect. Where an Arcane Incantation is studied, taught, and invoked by learned word and gesture, a Talent is simply had. It may surface unbidden in childhood, and what it demands afterwards is practice to control rather than instruction to acquire.

Because it is innate it is also narrow. A Talent does what it does and nothing else: a premonition of harm, a flash of another’s feeling, a small telekinetic push, a knack for finding water. A character with three Talents has three unrelated knacks, not a discipline; the breadth that a taught tradition confers is exactly what a Talent lacks.

Invoking it. A Talent is a Success Test like any other Mystical Ability. It is normally self-rated — it carries its own mastery level rather than drawing on a governing skill, because there is no discipline behind it to draw on. It is invoked directly, and it is free of the Incantation Casting Penalty that makes a powerful Arcane Incantation harder to cast the stronger it is: a Talent of any strength is invoked at its own level and no worse.

What bears on the test. The talent’s own modifiers, and the character’s circumstances as the gamemaster judges them — a Talent is not helped by tools, texts, or preparation, having none. The two standing limits apply as they do to every arcane act: nothing may be invoked while the character carries Aural Shock, and no Mystical Ability test may be fated.

The rules for the form are set out under Arcane Talent.
