Trance is the deliberate entry into a meditative state deep enough to open the practitioner’s perception onto the spirit world. Controlled breathing, focused visualisation, and long discipline loosen the bond between soul and body — far enough for heightened intuition at the shallow end, far enough to perceive from outside the body at the deep end.
It is a gateway more often than an end in itself: much of what a spirit-worker does is done from within a trance rather than instead of one, and the depth reached governs what the practitioner can then reach in turn. Its price is the obvious one. A body whose occupant has gone some distance out of it is quiet, unresponsive, and entirely at the mercy of whoever walks in, which is why trance-work is done in guarded places and among people the practitioner trusts.
Invoking it. Entering trance is a Success Test like any other Mystical Ability, and it is spirit-governed: it draws its EML from the Spirit Power it is performed through. The success level is read as the depth reached, which is what any further spirit-work performed from inside the trance then has to build on.
What bears on the test. Quiet, safety, and time, none of which are ordinarily available in a hurry; the practitioner’s own condition, since pain, exhaustion and distraction all pull the mind back toward the body; and the Spirit Power the trance is entered through. No trance may be entered while the practitioner carries Aural Shock, and no Mystical Ability test may be fated.
The form is set out under Spirit Action, and the channel it works through under Spirit Power.
