A stouter shaft of seasoned ash, capped with a heavy turned-wood or cast-bronze knob in place of a cutting head. Huntsmen loose them at boar and large fowl where a piercing arrow would spoil the pelt or be lost in the carcass; the weight of the head breaks bone and stuns at close range. Sergeants-at-arms sometimes carry a sheaf for clearing riotous crowds without lethal wound.
