A massive single or double-bladed head of forged steel, socketed onto a haft of ash or hickory six feet long, built for two-handed cleaving strokes that will split shield rim and shoulder-joint. The weight and reach make it a weapon of line-infantry and dismounted knights, swung in wide arcs to break formations. A warrior’s arm must be strong and trained to wield one all day.
