A circular plank shield some two to three feet across, laminated from oak or linden boards, faced with hide or rawhide and rimmed with iron against splitting. It is gripped center-hand behind a domed iron boss that can punch as well as parry, lending itself to the shield-wall of line footmen as readily as to the saddle of a raiding horseman. The common soldier’s shield of the realm — cheap to make, quick to replace, and forgiving of hard use.
